You are also going to have to make sure that you have the skills to do the job. This does not necessarily mean that you have to have construction skills. A contractors job mainly involves organizing the project and hiring the right subcontractors at the right time. The skills that you really need are to be organized and to really pay attention to details.

One of the most important tasks when you are building a house is to make sure that you hire good people to do the work. If you hire a contractor they will take care of most of this, that just means that you have to hire a good contractor. If you are going to act as your own contractor you will need to hire all of the subs like plumbers and electricians. Either way this requires you to really do some research to make sure that the people that you are hiring are up to the job. You can really save some money by doing a lot of the work yourself, just don't take on more than you can handle.
