If you don't know anybody who can provide you with a referral you are going to have to go through the Yellow Pages and compile a list based on their ads.

Once you have a list of designers that you think that you may want to work with you will need to sit down and interview them. You are going to want to ask them about their experience and their design philosophy and you will probably want to see pictures of the work that they have done before. At this same interview you will also want to make sure that you are able to tell the designer what you are looking for and what your budget for the project is going to be.

One option that you have for finding in an interior designer is furniture stores. Most of the larger stores will actually have a design department. Usually this will be much less expensive than hiring an independent designer. The downside is that you will pretty much be limited to furniture that they store sells. Nevertheless if there is a store where you really like the furniture this could be a way to go.

Regardless of who you hire to do your interior design work make sure that you get a contract in writing and that you completely understand it. It is also a good idea to make sure that you have a lawyer give it a look. This will help to make sure that there are no problems down the road.
